Red Lentil Curry

This Pakistani-style red lentil curry (masoor dal) is a simple, hearty, and flavourful dish made with everyday spices—perfect with rice or roti for a comforting, protein-rich meal

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup red lentils masoor dal, rinsed well
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 1 medium tomato chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tsp ginger paste or fresh grated ginger
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp red chilli powder adjust to taste
  • ½ tsp ground coriander
  • 2 tsp Paprika
  • 1 tsp salt adjust to taste
  • tbsp oil or ghee
  • 1.5 cups of Water

Method
 

Boil Lentils
  1. Boil the lentils in water for around 20 minutes until they soften, drain and set aside.
Make the Tarka
  1. In a pot, add the oil, chopped onions, garlic and ginger and cook for a few minutes.
  2. Add in the chopped tomatoes and cooked down until they soften.
  3. Add in the salt, turmeric, red chilli powder, paprika & ground coriander and cook until the oil separates from the onions.
Add Lentils
  1. Add in the boiled red lentils and cook for around 10 minutes, allowing the flavours to infuse.
  2. Add in the water and cook down until you get the desired consistency.
Serve
  1. Garnish with fresh coriander and serve hot with basmati rice, chapati, or naan.
