Tuna Mayo Ciabatta
I remember there was a period of time where I would have tuna mayo sandwiches every day at school until the point where I got completely sick of them! I waited several years before trying them again and now the obsession is back but now I’m obsessed with tuna mayo ciabatta. Now I love tuna, mayo and sweetcorn sandwiches but I wouldn’t ordinarily choose it if I was going to have a sit down meal.
I like to be a bit more adventurous with my choices, especially if there are delicious looking options on the menu. However, I tried a tuna ciabatta at a local Lebanese delicatessen because I wasn’t really in the mood to have anything else on the menu and I was so glad I did! It was so different than the normal tuna sandwiches I was used to.
It had olives, peppers and red onion in the tuna mixture and the ciabatta was toasted so it tasted nice and crunchy. It was also warm which made it taste even more delicious. I’ve made this countless time at home but I still haven’t perfected it!
I still go the delicatessen just so I can order that tuna ciabatta and try it again because I want to figure out what mine is missing! I’ve tried amending the recipe and even though it’s not quite the same, I’m still happy with it.

TOP TIPS FOR THE BEST TUNA MAYO CIABTTA
- Quality Tuna: Choose high-quality tuna, whether it’s canned or fresh and tuna in olive oil can add an extra layer of richness to the filling.
- Fresh Ciabatta: Opt for fresh and crusty ciabatta bread. The exterior should be crusty, and the interior should have a soft and airy texture. If possible, warm the ciabatta slightly before assembling the sandwich.
- Good-Quality Mayonnaise: Use a good-quality mayonnaise for a creamy and rich texture. You can also experiment with different types of mayonnaise, such as light, spicy or olive oil-based.
- Customise with Fresh Ingredients: Enhance the sandwich with fresh ingredients like crisp lettuce, sliced tomatoes, red onions or avocados. These will contribute to the flavour and also add texture and freshness.
- Lemon Zest or Juice: Add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice or a bit of lemon zest to the tuna mayo mixture for a bright and zesty flavour. This will add a depth of flavour to the dish and helps balance the richness of the mayo and tuna.
MORE TIPS
- Properly Drain Tuna: If using canned tuna, ensure you drain it well to prevent the filling getting watery. Press the tuna with a fork to remove any remaining liquid.
- Seasoning: Season the tuna mayo mixture with salt and pepper to taste and adjust the seasoning according to your preferences. Keep in mind that some canned tuna may already contain salt.
- Even Distribution: Mix the tuna and mayo thoroughly to ensure an even distribution of flavours.
- Layering Technique: When assembling the ciabatta, layer the tuna mayo mixture evenly across the bread. This will ensure that each bite has a balanced combination of flavours.
- Customise for Preferences: Allow for customisation based on individual preferences. Some may enjoy a bit of heat so add in some hot sauce or a pinch of red pepper flakes.
