SAMOSA CHAAT
The next time you make a chick pea curry and have some left over, this is the perfect dish to make the following day. I can’t take all the credit for this recipe because it was actually my husband who crafted this delicious dish. He bought a samosa chaat back from a local Asian sweetshop one day and I remember thinking it was insanely delicious! Before that point, I had only had yoghurt based chaats which I didn’t dislike but I didn’t enjoy them particularly. The difference with this samosa chaat is that it has a chick pea curry base, which not offers the dish a rich, spicy curry flavour but it is served warm (game changer!).
INGREDIENTS YOU’LL NEED FOR THE SAMOSA CHAAT
Vegetable Samosas – You could use chicken or beef samosas if you would rather at some meat to the dish. I have used beef samosas in the past for a samosa chaat and it was absolutely delicious. Feel free to buy pre-made samosas from the shop or local small business instead of making them yourself. This will save you a lot of time and it will taste just as good.
Chick Pea Curry – You could use simple chick peas but the curry adds such a spicy and vibrant flavour to the chaat. I tend to make samosa chaat when I have leftover chick pea curry from dinner the night before. The curry is the only time consuming element as the rest only consists of frying the samosas and assembling the chaat. I have a blog post if you want to make your own chick pea curry – Chick-pea Curry – My Simple Eats
Onions & Cucumber – Some salad will add a crunchy and fresh element to the chaat. Don’t skip this part, it will make more of a difference then you think it will.
Yoghurt, Tamarind Chutney, Spicy Mayo, Ketchup – The sauces are a big part of the chaat. I love to add all of the sauces mentioned above as well as yoghurt. They add a lot of flavour to the chaat and the tamarind sauce adds a lovely sweetness to the dish.
Handful Namak Paray – These crunchy, fried snacks are perfect to top the samosa chaat. You can find them at any south Asian food shop.
HOW TO MAKE SAMOSA CHAAT
There are several different components to this dish and every part of it brings some special. The base is a simple chick pea curry; I personally like to make the curry sauce a little thicker because I think it works better than a thin curry sauce. The next layer is the samosas, you can use any samosas of your choosing with any fillings. I generally tend to use vegetable samosas but chicken/meat samosas can work just as well.
The next step is to get some of the chick pea curry sauce and drizzle it onto the samosas. You don’t want to skip this step because the extra curry sauce softens the samosas and elevates the dish in my opinion.
Next you want to add the salad; red onion & cucumber works best I find. I dice up the cucumber and onion not too finely because you do want a crunch and then sprinkle onto the samosas. Then you want to add some sauces and there are quite a few that I use. Firstly, a drizzle of ketchup, then spicy mayo, tamarind sauce and then some yoghurt.
Finally garnish with some coriander or parsley and enjoy! This dish is guaranteed to be a hit at dinner parties or an afternoon tea and its quite simple as well!
TOP TIPS TO MAKE THE PERFECT SAMOSA CHAAT
- Perfectly Cooked Samosas: Start with well-cooked and crispy samosas. Whether homemade or shop bought, ensuring the samosas are thoroughly cooked adds a crunch to the chaat.
- Fresh and Flavourful Chutneys: I buy shop bought tamarind chutney to add a burst of vibrant flavour. The tangy tamarind complements the spiciness of the chaat perfectly.
- Yogurt for Creaminess: Use creamy yogurt to balance the spices and add a luscious creaminess to the chaat.
- Fresh salad: Dice up a fresh salad such as cucumbers, onions, and coriander to add a burst of freshness and a crisp texture to the chaat.
- Assemble Just Before Serving: Assemble the samosa chaat just before serving to maintain the crispiness of the samosas and the freshness of the salad.
MORE TIPS
- Customise to Taste: Customise the chaat according to personal preferences. Adjust the spice levels, add more chutney, or include additional toppings for a personalised touch.
- Serve in Individual Portions: For a visually appealing presentation, consider serving samosa chaat in individual portions. It not only looks attractive but also ensures an even distribution of flavours and toppings.
- Garnish with Fresh Herbs: Sprinkle chopped fresh coriander or mint leaves just before serving to add a burst of herbal freshness to the chaat. It also makes the chaat look pretty.
- Experiment with Different Samosas: Feel free to experiment with different types of samosas, such as potato samosas, mixed vegetable or meat-filled. This can introduce a variety and unique flavours to your chaat.
