Snickers Dates
I did not expect to enjoy this snack as much as I did but it’s perfectly sweet, nutty and has a rich caramel flavour because of the dates. Snickers are one of my all-time favourite chocolate bars and I wanted to try something that has the same flavour profile but is a little healthier. You could alter the recipe and use dark chocolate if you want to make it even healthier but using milk chocolate makes it taste just like a snickers bar. Definitely give this one a try because I can guarantee that you won’t be disappointed!
WHY YOU’LL LOVE SNICKERS DATES
- Sweet and Nutty Combination: Dates have a natural sweetness and combined with the nutty crunch of peanuts, they are divine. The medjool dates provide a rich and caramel-like flavour that pairs perfectly with the crunchy texture of the nuts.
- Healthy Indulgence: Despite their indulgent flavour, snickers dates can be a healthier alternative to chocolate bars. Dates are a good source of natural sugars and contain fibre, vitamins and minerals. The addition of nuts provides healthy fats and protein.
- Quick and Easy to Make: Snickers dates are very simple to make with minimal ingredients and preparation. It’s a quick and easy snack or dessert option that requires no baking, making them a great sweet treat when you’re short for time.
- Customisable: You can personalise snickers dates according to your taste preferences. You can use almonds, cashews or pistachios. You can also add a sprinkle of sea salt or a drizzle of chocolate if you wish.
- Satisfying Sweet Craving: If you have a sweet tooth but want something a little healthier, snickers dates are a good option. The natural sugars in dates, combined with the richness of nut butter and the crunch of nuts, can satisfy your cravings.
INGREDIENTS YOU’LL NEED
Dates – You can really use any dates for this recipe however using bigger, more fluffy dates such as Medjool dates (which I used) will certainly add a better, more caramel style flavour to the dates. They are also larger than most dates so they can hold more peanut butter and salted peanuts which is great for enhancing the snickers style flavour. Medjool dates are also my favourite style of date and you can find them in most supermarkets and easily online.
Peanut Butter – Whether you use smooth or chunky is completely up to you as well as the brand of peanut butter. If you’re trying to be a little healthier, it would be better to get the PB’s which contain only blended peanuts (and sometimes they add salt) but there shouldn’t be any additional sugars or oils etc. I went with peanut butter because I wanted to make the dates taste like a traditional Snickers bar however if you want to use Almond, Cashew or any other nut butter then go for it; I’m sure either of them will taste delicious.
Salted Peanuts – Peanuts which are already salted just taste so darn good and they were perfect in balancing out the sweetness of the chocolate and dates. You can use plan peanuts (or any other nut) and then sprinkle on some salt afterwards. Also, don’t skip the peanuts on top of the dates because they really elevate the taste and make it even more delicious.
TOP TIPS ON MAKING THE BEST SNICKERS DATES
- Good quality dates: Make sure you use good quality dates such as Medjool dates because they will elevate the taste of the dates.
- Pit the dates: Carefully pit the dates and stuff with peanut butter or a nut butter of your choice.
- Salted Peanuts: Use salted peanuts or add some salt to the peanuts if they aren’t salted because it will help to balance out the sweet flavour of the chocolate and dates.
- Chill dates beforehand: Make sure you chill the dates before coating them in melted chocolate because they will be much easier to handle.
- Chill dates after: Chill the dates after coating them in melted chocolate as well because they will be so much more satisfying with a hard chocolate shell.
MORE TIPS
- Add peanut butter in the centre: Adding peanut butter into the centre of dates gives it the perfect peanut-y taste.
- Pick a nut butter: Even though Snickers are made with peanuts, you don’t have to fill the dates with Peanut butter. Pick whichever nut butter you like such as Almond or cashew. I’m pistachio butter would taste great as well!
- Storage: Store the Snickers dates in an airtight container in the fridge to keep them fresh. They can be eaten chilled or at room temperature.
- Choose your chocolate: Pick whichever chocolate you like the best. You can pick milk, dark or white.
- Customise: You can experiment with whichever chocolate or nut butter you’d like. I’m sure pistachio butter and white chocolate would taste fantastic!
