Strawberry and Banana Smoothie
Smoothies have been a staple in the summer but I don’t drink them as much during the winter. Mainly because I prefer using frozen fruit and it can get a little too cold to drink when the weather is on the minus’!
I made this smoothie because it brings back happy memories of my university days. There was a period of time where this used to be more post-gym smoothie because I used to comeback ravenous and it was a way of getting something nutritious in me. Since then I’ve started to play around with smoothie recipes to try and include in more greens or healthy fats.
The main reason for this is because I’ve since realised that whilst the fruits are healthy, they do have a high sugar content so adding in some veggies, greens or healthy fats (such as nuts or avocado) will help to balance out the sugar content which will reduce the chances of you having a sugar spike and crash.
I also use half water and half milk when making my smoothies because I strive to reduce the amount of dairy I eat. This is particularly hard because I love all things dairy, especially cheese and yoghurt but if I keep my meals balanced and eat everything in moderation than I’m sure it will be fine.
Strawberry and banana used to be my ultimate favourite combo but I would say my new favourite smoothie is one I had a local, family owned restaurant which I re-created at home. It’s a base of avocados and bananas and then they add in almonds, dates and dried apricots, its so good!

TOP TIPS ON MAKING THE BEST STRAWBERRY AND BANANA SMOOTHIE
- Use Ripe Bananas: Choose ripe bananas for natural sweetness and a creamy texture. The more ripe you bananas are, the sweeter your smoothie will be.
- Fresh or Frozen Strawberries: Use fresh strawberries when they’re in season for the sweetest flavour. If fresh strawberries aren’t available then frozen strawberries work well and add a nice ice cream like texture to the smoothie.
- Balance of Flavours: The sweetness of bananas and the tartness of strawberries create the perfect balance of flavours. Adjust the ingredients to suit your preferences by tasting the smoothie while you blend.
- Add a Liquid Base: Choose a liquid base that complements the flavours. I used milk which worked really well so you could include dairy or plant based milk, yogurt or fruit juice. You could try a combination, such as half milk and half yogurt to make it more creamy.
- Freeze Ingredients: For an extra creamy and thick smoothie, freeze the banana and strawberries before blending. If you do this, you won’t need to add any ice to the mixture.
MORE TIPS
- Include a Creamy Element: Add something creamy to enhance the texture of the smoothie. Try Greek yogurt, regular yogurt or a scoop of almond butter to contribute to the creaminess and richness.
- Sweeten Naturally: The smoothie will have some natural sweetness because of the fruit, but if you need additional sweetness, consider adding a natural sweetener like honey or dates.
- Experiment with Greens: Sneak in some greens for added nutrients without compromising the flavour. Spinach is a great option that blends well and has a mild flavour which won’t overpower the fruity taste.
- Texture Consistency: Blend the ingredients thoroughly to achieve a smooth and creamy texture and ensure that everything is well incorporated.
- Serve Immediately: Enjoy your banana and strawberry smoothie immediately after blending for the freshest taste and best texture.
